Rethink Your Purchases: One pair of sneakers at a time
I hate telling people that they can save money by cutting down on what they buy. But, what if you can buy what you want and have more money left over? Sounds like a scam, I know, but let me break it down in an example.
I love Vans Old Skool sneakers. They are comfortable, great for walking multiple miles a day in New York City and come in multiple colors. I have been wearing this style of shoe as my primary shoe for over 5+ years and am too stubborn to replace them until the heels are so worn down that my feet start to hurt.
Vans Old Skool sneakers are reasonably priced, they are currently $70. Vans has stores across the country or they currently offer free shipping for online orders above $85.
I currently have 4 pairs of Vans that I rotate through and are close to their end of life. I want to replace all 4 pairs of sneakers in the next 12 months without spending $280.
Now, I’m going to break down my thought process on how this works so you can apply it to your favorite brand of sneakers, other shoes, or even clothing where you know your size.
I’ve been using Poshmark since November 2017 as both a buyer and seller. I love that Poshmark allows you to make some extra cash, buy pre-loved items and avoid useable items going to landfills. There is already so much stuff in the world, if I don’t have to buy a new product I’ll try not to.
Last week I started my search in earnest with the goal to purchase one new pair of black of purple Vans Old Skool shoes in near perfect condition at half the price, $35 or less including shipping.
I found the perfect pair, but the price was above my goal so I put in an offer for $25.00 + $7.97 for expedited shipping. I love that Poshmark offers the ability to haggle like a marketplace. My offer was accepted and a few days later I received my purple Vans Old Skool sneakers. They were as listed with light wear on the laces, though otherwise in perfect condition.
I’ve previously used Poshmark to buy many shoes including Asics running shoes, Jeffrey Campbell Chelsea rain boots, Steve Madden espadrille wedge sandals and more.

Review general prices and compare to your favorite brand’s list price. What discount are you looking for? Are you particular about color? How long are you willing to wait for your shoes?
Tip #1: If you aren’t in a rush you can love posts with a heart and watch in case prices drop over time
Tip #2: Explore the person’s full closet. If you buy more than one item the shipping cost is the same!
Buy your favorite product at a lower cost, that is still almost brand new!
Put your additional savings towards something meaningful
